About the Mt Macedon Dawn Service
Each year, The Mt Macedon ANZAC Dawn Service attracts over 3,000 people from local communities, metropolitan Melbourne and even interstate.
The Service is organised and run completely by local volunteers with the RSL and Vietnam Veterans Association at the forefront. This event could not be staged without the total commitment of the broader community with participation from a wide range of organisations and individuals including the Scouts, SES, CFA, the ADF School of Languages, Shire Council, local businesses, musical, choral and church groups.
The Service is a commemorative event that aims to honour the sacrifice of veterans, to salute their service and to learn from the price they paid.
The service provides a rare opportunity to educate and reflect on the realities and outcomes of war. It uniquely involves local teenagers reading from the writings of men and women, penned while serving at the front in all conflicts, or soon after. Some readings are from interviews and articles relating to contemporary serving members.
The Mt Macedon ANZAC Dawn Service shares stories of the long-term effects of war on veterans and families down through the generations. The content, design and setting for the Service allow people of all ages to feel an emotional link with military personnel in a war zone.
This Service is not only an important tribute to the men and women who have served, it's part of our local history and culture. It provides an honest reflection of war and aims to inspire non-violent solutions to family, community, national and international conflict. It commemorates the service and sacrifice of veterans and educates Australians about our ANZAC history.
The Mt Macedon Dawn Service is one of the largest dawn services to be held in Victoria and is a significant annual event in the Macedon Ranges.
